{"id":10137,"date":"2022-08-26T10:41:46","date_gmt":"2022-08-26T10:41:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/?p=10137"},"modified":"2022-08-26T11:58:23","modified_gmt":"2022-08-26T11:58:23","slug":"california-to-end-sales-of-gas-powered-cars-by-2035","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/california-to-end-sales-of-gas-powered-cars-by-2035\/","title":{"rendered":"California to End Sales of Gas-Powered Cars by 2035"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-10137\" data-postid=\"10137\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-10137 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s pollution and air quality-focused agency, the California Air Resources Board (CARB), announced on Thursday the approval of a rule requiring all new car, pickup truck and SUV sales in the state to be zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new rule, Advanced Clean Cars II, codifies a goal set by California Governor Gavin Newsom in an executive order in 2020, and will likely set a new standard for several states, such as New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey, that currently follow California\u2019s vehicle rules, and constitute roughly 40% of new car sales in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CARB Chair Liane Randolph, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cOnce again California is leading the nation and the world with a regulation that sets ambitious but achievable targets for ZEV sales. Rapidly accelerating the number of ZEVs on our roads and highways will deliver substantial emission and pollution reductions to all Californians, especially for those who live near roadways and suffer from persistent air pollution.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the 2035 target, the rule provides a year-by-year roadmap for ZEV requirements, starting with ZEVs making up at least 35% in 2026, and hitting 68% in 2030. The rule leaves some room for continued sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), but requires them to have an all-electric range of at least 50 miles under real-world driving conditions, and allows automakers to meet only up to 20% of their overall ZEV requirement with PHEVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule-1024x528.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10139\" width=\"727\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule-1024x528.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule-768x396.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule-610x314.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/California-ZEV-rule.jpg 1073w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><figcaption><em>Source: California Air Resources Board<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Transportation, including fuel production, accounts for roughly half of California\u2019s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and 80% of the state\u2019s air pollutants. According to CARB, the new regulation will cut GHG emissions from cars, pickups and SUVs in half by 2040, contributing significantly to California\u2019s goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Commenting on the approval of the new rule, Governor Newsom said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThis plan\u2019s yearly targets \u2013 35 percent ZEV sales by 2026, 68 percent by 2030, and 100 percent by 2035 \u2013 provide our roadmap to reducing dangerous carbon emissions and moving away from fossil fuels. That\u2019s 915 million oil barrels\u2019 worth of emissions that won\u2019t pollute our communities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>California\u2019s new rule will still require approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Biden administration has made several moves to accelerate the expansion of zero emission vehicles, including providing tax credits for ZEV purchases in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/biden-signs-largest-ever-us-climate-investment-package-into-law\/\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, and allocating billions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/biden-commits-5-billion-to-build-national-ev-charging-network\/\">development of a national EV charging<\/a> network.
