The coalition represents $11.4\ntrillion in assets, and more than 90 investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coalition engaged with Chipotle Mexican Grill, Domino\u2019s\nPizza, McDonald\u2019s, Restaurant Brands International (owners of Burger King),\nWendy\u2019s Co. and Yum! Brands (owners of KFC and Pizza Hut), urging the fast food\ngiants to set aggressive targets to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions,\nwater usage and water quality impacts of their meat and dairy supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One-year review: insufficient respone<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The coalition initially engaged the companies one year ago, and has now released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairr.org\/article\/global-investor-engagement-on-meat-sourcing\/#the-case-for-engagement\">new analysis<\/a> reviewing the results to date. \u00a0While some progress on behalf of the companies has been noted, the coalition believes that the fast food companies\u2019 responses are thus far inadequate. According to a press release put out in conjunction with the analysis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fast food companies\u2019 efforts thus far do not\nsufficiently mitigate their exposure to the considerable physical, regulatory,\nand reputational risks climate change poses to animal agriculture. What\u2019s more,\nthe companies are not responding at the pace required to match the magnitude of\ntheir environmental impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coalition outlined the progress and shortfalls of the\nsix companies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the six engaged companies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Two (McDonald\u2019s and Yum\nBrands!) have set or publicly committed to set science-based emission reduction\ntargets, which are adequate for limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees\ncelsius above pre-industrial levels, with the aim of limiting warming to 1.5\ndegrees. Restaurant Brands International has stated its intention to set an\nemissions reduction target for its restaurants in the U.S. and Canada.<\/li><li>Only one (McDonald\u2019s) has\npublicly disclosed that it has conducted a water risk assessment specifically\nfor meat and dairy suppliers. Restaurant Brands International plans to conduct\na life-cycle assessment which will consider its water footprint, among other\nimpacts.<\/li><li>None have set specific\nrequirements on climate and water for meat and dairy suppliers, with unclear\ncompliance monitoring systems across the board.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ceres and FAIRR intend to continue to engage with the fast\nfood companies on behalf of the investor coalition.<\/p>\n<!--themify_builder_content-->\n<div id=\"themify_builder_content-129\" data-postid=\"129\" class=\"themify_builder_content themify_builder_content-129 themify_builder tf_clear\">\n    <\/div>\n<!--\/themify_builder_content-->\n<span class=\"et_bloom_bottom_trigger\"><\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cCompanies are not responding at the pace required\u201d A global investor coalition, facilitated by global investor network FAIRR and sustainability organisation Ceres, is calling on six of the world\u2019s largest fast food companies to take faster and deeper action to manage climate and water risks in their supply chains.
