Facing increasing pressure to take action on environmental\nissues, Blackrock has joined Climate Action 100+, a network of investment\nmanagers dedicated to promote cleaner practices among large corporations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
With nearly $7 trillion assets under management, BlackRock\nis the world\u2019s largest investment manager, making it a prime target for activists\nlooking to put pressure on corporate GHG emitters. BlackRock has recently been\nthe focus of public scrutiny for not backing shareholder resolutions on environmental\nissues and disclosures, particularly after the company declined to join many\nother institutional investors in signing the Global Investor Statement to\nGovernments on Climate Change at last year\u2019s United Nations Climate Conference\n(COP25). Joining Climate Action 100+, however, appears to indicate BlackRock\nwill become more active and vocal on climate issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Climate Action 100+ consists of more than 370 investors, with\nover $41 trillion in assets collectively under management. The organization engages\ncompanies on issues including governance, curbing emissions and strengthening\nclimate-related disclosures, and targets primarily 100 \u201csystemically important\nemitters,\u201d which account for two thirds of global industrial emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
BlackRock\u2019s involvement in Climate Action 100+ will likely\nhave a meaningful impact on corporate engagement on environmental issues.\nAccording to Stephanie Pfeifer, member of the Climate Action 100+ Steering\nCommittee and CEO, Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC), \u201c\u201cWith\nthe world\u2019s largest asset manager now joining Climate Action 100+, company\nboards should be under no illusion of the need to take action on climate change\nand reduce their emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
