{"id":43,"date":"2020-01-17T11:43:40","date_gmt":"2020-01-17T11:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/?p=43"},"modified":"2020-12-28T10:46:21","modified_gmt":"2020-12-28T10:46:21","slug":"microsoft-pledges-to-be-carbon-negative-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/microsoft-pledges-to-be-carbon-negative-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Commits to Carbon Target \u201cMoonshot\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Tech Giant Pledges to be Carbon-Negative by 2030<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Citing the urgent climate problem facing the planet,\nMicrosoft has outlined an ambitious plan, to go beyond carbon-neutral, pledging\nto become \u201ccarbon-negative\u201d by 2030. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2020\/01\/16\/microsoft-will-be-carbon-negative-by-2030\/\">blog post<\/a> yesterday, Microsoft President Brad Smith outlined his belief in corporate climate responsibility, writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cWhile the world will need to reach net zero, those of us who can afford to move faster and go further should do so. That\u2019s why today we are announcing an ambitious goal and a new plan to reduce and ultimately remove Microsoft\u2019s carbon footprint.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Mr. Smith commits to a bold target, stating that \u201cby 2050 Microsoft will remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s plan involves cutting the companies carbon emissions by half by 2030, as well as taking a technology-led approach to help the company\u2019s suppliers and customers reduce their own carbon footprints. Additionally, the company has pledged to be a vocal\nadvocate for public policy that accelerates carbon reduction and removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s carbon-negative plan would put it at the\nforefront of the corporate climate fight, even relative to the other technology\ngiants, who tend to be leaders in environmental responsibility. Google has\nalready been carbon neutral for a decade, and matches 100% of electricity consumption\nfor their operations with purchases of renewable energy. Apple has reduced its\ncarbon footprint by 35% over the past 3 years, but still had an estimated\ncarbon footprint of 25.3 million tonnes in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft\u2019s self-described carbon \u201cmoonshot\u201d throws down the\ngauntlet for its mega-cap peers to follow suit, and we expect it will\nultimately pressure the larger corporate community to up their environmental\ngame.
