{"id":79,"date":"2020-01-22T13:30:56","date_gmt":"2020-01-22T13:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/?p=79"},"modified":"2020-01-22T13:33:17","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T13:33:17","slug":"starbucks-sets-aggressive-sustainability-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/starbucks-sets-aggressive-sustainability-targets\/","title":{"rendered":"Starbucks Sets Aggressive Sustainability Targets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coffee giant aspires to become \u201cResource Positive\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/stories\/2020\/message-from-starbucks-ceo-kevin-johnson-starbucks-new-sustainability-commitment\">letter<\/a> to partners, customers and stakeholders, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson outlined the coffee giants new sustainability targets, including the aspirational multi-decade goal of becoming \u201cresource positive,\u201d giving more to the planet than the company takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Johnson writes that \u201csustainability has been at\nStarbucks core since the beginning and consistent with our belief that we can\nbuild a great business that scales for good.\u201d He goes on to highlight some of\nthe significant sustainability milestones Starbucks has achieved over the past\nseveral years, including sourcing 99% of coffee ethically through Coffee and\nFarmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) practices, and becoming a leader in Leadership in Energy\nand Environmental Design (L.E.E.D.) stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resource positive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starbucks long-term goal is to become resource positive, \u201cstoring\nmore carbon than we emit, eliminating waste, and providing more clean\nfreshwater than we use.\u201d The company established 5 environmental strategies to\nbegin moving towards this goal:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>1. We will expand plant-based options, migrating toward a more environmentally friendly menu.<\/p><p><\/p><p>2. We will shift from single-use to reusable packaging. <\/p><p><\/p><p>3. We will invest in innovative and regenerative agricultural practices, reforestation, forest conservation and water replenishment in our supply chain.<\/p><p><\/p><p>4. We will invest in better ways to manage our waste, both in our stores and in our communities, to ensure more reuse, recycling and elimination of food waste. <\/p><p><\/p><p>5. We will innovate to develop more eco-friendly stores, operations, manufacturing and delivery.<\/p><cite>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/stories\/2020\/message-from-starbucks-ceo-kevin-johnson-starbucks-new-sustainability-commitment\">Starbucks<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New 2030 targets<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the multi-decade goals, Starbucks also set\nspecific preliminary 2030 sustainability targets, including a 50% reduction in\ncarbon emissions from operations and supply chain, conservation or replenishment\nof 50% of water withdrawal for direct operations and coffee production, and a\n50% reduction in waste sent to landfill from stores and manufacturing.\nStarbucks will formalize these targets in 2021, the company\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup>\nanniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A broad ESG awakening?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Starbucks\u2019 aspirational goals appear to be part of a sustainability awakening in corporate America. As we have reported at ESG Today, in the past few weeks, several companies have publicly announced similar ESG-boosting measures. Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/microsoft-pledges-to-be-carbon-negative-by-2030\/\">Microsoft established<\/a> a new target to become \u201ccarbon-negative\u201d by 2030, and investment giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esgtoday.com\/blackrock-ceo-letter-highlights-climate-and-sustainability\/\">BlackRock announced<\/a> a new focus on ESG at the core of their investment process.
